Olympic and world champion Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra, fell just short of securing victory at the Doha Diamond League meet's javelin throw event, finishing in second place behind Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic.

Despite a valiant effort, Chopra's final throw of 88.36m came up two centimetres shy of Vadlejch's winning mark of 88.38m.

Throughout the competition, the 26-year-old Indian trailed behind the experienced Vadlejch, who clinched the title with a stellar throw in the third round. Chopra's last-ditch effort to surpass him fell agonizingly short, denying him the opportunity to defend the title he claimed in the previous year's event.

Meanwhile, two-time world champion Anderson Peters secured the third position with a best throw of 86.62m, rounding off the podium.

However, it was not only Chopra who faced disappointment at the meet. Kishore Jena, making his Diamond League debut, struggled to make an impact and was eliminated after three rounds of throws.

His best effort of 76.31m left him in ninth place, failing to replicate his silver medal-winning performance at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.

Despite his past successes, including victories in the Doha Diamond League and numerous individual legs of the competition, Chopra faced challenges in finding his form in his first event of the season.

While his final throw of 88.36m marked a notable improvement, it was insufficient to secure victory against the seasoned Vadlejch.

Chopra's journey in the Doha Diamond League began with a foul in his opening attempt, followed by a respectable throw of 84.93m in the second round, placing him in second position behind Vadlejch.

He continued to improve, registering distances of 86.24m and 86.18m in the subsequent rounds, but Vadlejch's consistent performance maintained his lead.

Despite Chopra's commendable effort in the final round, where he recorded his second-best throw of the day at 88.36m, Vadlejch's earlier mark proved unconquerable, securing him the victory.

Although the competition lacked the anticipated tailwind conducive to big throws, the athletes showcased their prowess in a closely contested event.

Following his participation in the Doha Diamond League, Chopra is set to compete in the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar from May 12 to 15, marking his return to domestic competition after three years.

Jena will also be among the participants in the men's javelin event scheduled for May 14 and 15.

After the domestic event, Chopra is slated to compete in the prestigious Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on June 18, before returning to the Diamond League circuit for the Paris meet on July 7.
