The host nation, Italy, has slipped to third place after the United States and Norway claimed consecutive gold medals on day three.

Norway has taken the top position in the medals tally at the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, officials confirmed on Monday. The host nation, Italy, has slipped to third place after the United States and Norway claimed consecutive gold medals on day three.

Norway now leads the standings, closely followed by the United States, Italy, Japan, and Austria, with the latter three each holding one gold medal and occupying fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

With only 13 of the 116 events completed, the leaderboard remains wide open, setting the stage for intense competition ahead, particularly in skiing and skating, where traditional powerhouses such as Norway, China, Japan, and the United States are expected to challenge strongly.

Current medal standings (as of Day 3):

Norway: 3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (Total: 6) — Leading in gold medals, building on dominance in cross-country skiing.

United States: 2 gold, 0 silver, 0 bronze (Total: 2) — Strong performances in alpine skiing and figure skating.

Italy (hosts): 1 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze (Total: 9) — Tops the overall medal count.

Japan: 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze (Total: 4)

Austria: 1 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze (Total: 3)

Germany: 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (Total: 3)

Other nations with medals include the Czech Republic, France, and Sweden (each with 1 gold and 1 silver), Switzerland (1 gold), and minor medals for Slovenia and South Korea.

Key highlights from Day 3:

Figure skating team event:

Team USA, led by Ilia Malinin (known as the “Quad God”), secured gold with exceptional performances, including a strong free-skate contribution from Malinin.

Japan took silver (narrowly behind), and Italy claimed bronze. This marked a repeat success for the US in the event following their win in Beijing 2022.

Malinin shone despite a slightly scaled-back short programme earlier in the competition (where Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama edged him in the men’s segment), but the US team pulled ahead overall.

Women’s alpine downhill:

Breezy Johnson (USA) claimed gold, delivering Team USA’s first individual medal of the Games and boosting their momentum.

Men’s 10km + 10km skiathlon (cross-country):

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (Norway) won gold — his first of these Games and sixth Olympic gold overall — cruising to victory and positioning himself strongly for the upcoming sprint events.

Additional medals were awarded in biathlon (e.g., France’s mixed relay gold), speed skating (men’s 5,000m), and various alpine and snowboard events, with Italy accumulating several bronze medals and Norway consolidating its gold lead.
