One-off Test: India search for missing links against Afghanistan

While the hosts remain overwhelming favourites on paper, the match presents an opportunity to fine-tune combinations and assess emerging talent during a period of transition.

Still seeking to erase memories of a disappointing home Test phase not too long ago, India will begin a new chapter when they take on Afghanistan in a one-off Test starting on Saturday. While the hosts remain overwhelming favourites on paper, the match presents an opportunity to fine-tune combinations and assess emerging talent during a period of transition.

The contrast between the two sides is stark. When Afghanistan made their Test debut against India in Bengaluru in 2018, they were bundled out inside two days. In that match, Afghanistan lost 10 wickets between lunch and tea on the second day, while the remaining 10 wickets fell between tea and stumps as India completed a crushing victory.

Eight years later, Afghanistan arrive with greater experience and a stronger understanding of the longest format. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi will be hoping his side can push India much harder this time, particularly as the hosts continue to experiment with personnel and search for answers ahead of a crucial Test series against Sri Lanka later this year.

India, meanwhile, would be wise not to underestimate the visitors. The painful 0-2 home series defeat to South Africa last year remains a reminder that preparation and discipline can bridge even significant gaps in experience and reputation.

Another major talking point revolves around the all-rounder's slot, with Ravindra Jadeja rested for the match. Although Jadeja remains a vital member of India's Test setup, particularly because of his batting contributions overseas, there is a growing recognition within the team management that preparations must begin for life after one of India's most accomplished all-rounders.

Questions have emerged regarding the effectiveness of Jadeja's bowling, which has not been as consistently threatening in recent times as it once was. While his experience and batting continue to make him indispensable, selectors are actively evaluating future options.

The spotlight has therefore shifted to two contenders—Rajasthan left-arm spinner Manav Suthar and Vidarbha all-rounder Harsh Dubey. Based on recent training sessions, Suthar appears to have made a strong impression. Possessing a classical left-arm orthodox action, he extracts drift and loop while challenging both edges of the bat. His style resembles that of a traditional attacking spinner capable of creating wicket-taking opportunities.

Dubey offers a different skill set. His bowling is generally more defensive and based on accuracy, but he compensates with useful batting ability and clean striking. That versatility gives him qualities similar to Jadeja, particularly in overseas conditions where batting depth becomes increasingly valuable.

The decision between the two could provide insight into the team management's long-term vision and preferred balance in Test cricket. While India enter the contest as clear favourites, Afghanistan have little to lose and everything to gain. The disparity between the two sides becomes evident when examining their respective Test journeys. Since their first meeting in 2018, Afghanistan have played just 11 additional Test matches up to June 2026.

India, by comparison, have featured in 67 Tests during the same period. Remarkably, Rishabh Pant alone has played 49 Tests in that timeframe. In fact, Pant had not yet made his Test debut when Afghanistan last faced India. Of the Indian players who featured in the 2018 Test, only KL Rahul remains in the current squad. For Afghanistan, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and senior batter Rahmat Shah are the only survivors from that encounter.

The experience gap is also reflected in batting records. Afghanistan's current batting line-up has collectively scored nine Test centuries, whereas India's revamped squad has accumulated 39 hundreds between them. Although Afghanistan held a preparation camp in Jalalabad before travelling to India, practice sessions can only achieve so much. Match experience remains irreplaceable in Test cricket, particularly against a team of India's calibre.

Weather could be an additional opponent

Apart from the cricket itself, both teams will have to contend with the intense North Indian summer.  The scheduling of a Test match in June has raised eyebrows, especially considering it comes immediately after two demanding months of IPL cricket and ahead of a lengthy white-ball tour of the United Kingdom.
The extreme heat has already influenced training routines. During practice sessions, Indian players were seen travelling short distances between training venues in vehicles rather than walking under the harsh afternoon sun.
Conditions are expected to be physically taxing throughout the match, placing an additional premium on fitness, hydration and concentration.
