More than 2,200 runners, including civilians and soldiers, participated in the second edition of the 'Sikkim Soldierathon' Hill Half Marathon on Sunday, showcasing the vibrant fusion of fitness, culture, and military-civil engagement in the Himalayan state.

Flagged off at Paljor Stadium by Mizoram Governor Gen V K Singh (Retd) in the presence of Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, the marathon carried the theme 'Great Himalayan Connect', aimed at fostering closer ties between the Indian Army and citizens, particularly the youth, while promoting sports tourism in the region.

The event featured three categories: 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km, with soldiers from the Sikkim Scouts, Ladakh Scouts, and Dogra Scouts running alongside civilians. Organised jointly by the Eastern Command, Trishakti Corps, Raj Bhavan Sikkim, and 'Fitistan: Ek Fit Bharat', the marathon underscored both physical endurance and patriotic spirit.

Governor Mathur lauded the initiative as "an inspiring effort towards the state's youth power, military-social coordination and civil consciousness," extending his congratulations to the organising committee, army officers, participants, and supporting organisations.

Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, GOC-in-C Eastern Command, addressed the participants, stating: "Every step you take is a tribute to the valour and sacrifice of our soldiers guarding our borders. I am honoured to be part of this new vibrant initiative to promote a 'Fit India' and strengthen the bond between the Indian Army and our citizens."

Lieutenant General Man Raj Singh Mann, GOC, 33 Corps, highlighted the unique opportunity Soldierathon offers civilians, saying: "Soldierathon is a unique event that offers a lifetime opportunity for civilians to run with the brave soldiers who stand vigil round the clock on the borders."

Participants were awarded achievers medals and promotional items, with winners receiving cash prizes sponsored by Sikkim Raj Bhavan. The marathon was further enlivened with cultural performances, providing a festive backdrop to the sporting spectacle.

The Soldierathon, first held last year, has quickly become a signature event celebrating physical fitness, military valor, and community engagement in Sikkim’s serene Himalayan landscape.
