A devastated David Miller described South Africa's narrow defeat to India in the T20 World Cup final as a "tough pill to swallow," but expressed pride in his team’s journey and resilience.
The Proteas, shedding their infamous "chokers" tag, reached their first-ever T20 World Cup final unbeaten.
Despite their stellar run, they fell short by seven runs in a nail-biting finish against India.
In an Instagram story posted late on Monday, Miller shared his heartbreak: "I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don't explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit."
South Africa had enjoyed a remarkable tournament, emerging victorious in high-pressure situations and becoming the favorites for the title.
"This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar," Miller added.
The final saw South Africa on track for a historic win, needing 30 runs from the last 30 balls. However, a superb effort by India's bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, saw them snatch victory. Key wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen turned the tide.
With Miller at the crease and 16 runs needed off the last over, South Africa's hopes were still alive. However, a brilliant boundary catch by Suryakumar Yadav ended Miller's innings and dashed the Proteas' dreams.
This was South Africa's closest attempt at a title, having exited in the semifinals seven times in ICC events. Despite the loss, Miller remains optimistic about the future and the team's potential to break new ground.
