Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated athletes Gulveer Singh and Unnati Sharma on Sunday after both secured bronze medals in their respective disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister commended Gulveer Singh for making history by capturing bronze in the men's 5,000 metres.
He noted that Gulveer has become the first Indian athlete to claim two track and field medals at a single edition of the Games, having previously won a medal in the 10,000 metres. Furthermore, this marks India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the men's 5,000-metre event. Describing it as a landmark moment for Indian athletics, PM Modi offered his best wishes for the runner's future career. In a separate message, the Prime Minister praised judoka Unnati Sharma following her bronze-medal victory in the women's 63kg division.
Applauding her determination and focus throughout the competition, he expressed confidence in her continued success on the international stage. The congratulations follow a fruitful Saturday for India's contingent, which delivered strong performances across boxing, athletics, para athletics, and judo. Indian boxers enjoyed exceptional success, taking home seven gold and three silver medals. In para athletics, Soman Rana earned gold in the men's F57 shot put, with teammate Shubham Juyal picking up silver.
The track and field squad added further silverware in the men's triple jump, where Praveen Chithravel secured silver and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran took bronze. It was a mixed day elsewhere for the squad. Judokas Karanjit Singh Maan and Inunganbi Takhellambam bowed out during their respective repechage contests, while track cyclists David Beckham, Ronaldo Singh, and Rojit Singh failed to progress from the men's sprint qualifiers.
In other events, Ramesh Shanmugam finished seventh in the men's 1500m T54 para athletics final. Race walker Priyanka Goswami narrowly missed out on a podium spot by finishing fourth in the women's 10,000m, an event in which Ravina Gayakwad was disqualified. Cyclists Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon did not complete their qualifying heat for the men's 10km scratch race, and lawn bowls duo Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar were eliminated by England in the men's pairs.
Nayanmoni Saikia also exited the women's singles competition following a loss to South Africa's Bridget Herselman. In athletics, Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar finished outside the medal placings in the men's pole vault, whilst the Indian mixed 4x400m relay team finished sixth. India head into the final day of the 2026 Glasgow Games positioned strongly in the standings, holding a tally of 39 medals comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze.
