World chess champion D Gukesh will be among the four esteemed athletes honoured with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award on January 17, 2025.

The event, to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, will see President Droupadi Murmu conferring the awards to these distinguished sportspersons.

Gukesh, whose incredible performances have brought pride to the nation, will be receiving the highest sporting honour in recognition of his remarkable achievements in chess.

Known for his exceptional skill and strategic prowess, Gukesh has cemented his place as one of the brightest stars in Indian sports.

Accompanying Gukesh in the honours list is double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker. The recognition for Bhaker holds special significance as her name was initially absent from the list of nominees for the Khel Ratna.

This acknowledgment underscores her extraordinary contributions to Indian shooting and her consistent success on the international stage.

Also set to receive the award are Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and Paralympian Praveen Kumar. These athletes have demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication in their respective fields, making the nation proud with their performances.

The Sports Ministry, in its statement on January 2, highlighted that the decision was made after careful consideration of the recommendations put forth by the Committee.

The awards aim to honour sportspersons, coaches, universities, and other entities contributing to the development of sports in India.

The Khel Ratna, named after hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, is the pinnacle of sporting recognition in India. It symbolises not only individual achievement but also the spirit of perseverance, excellence, and dedication.

Gukesh’s journey in chess has been nothing short of inspirational. Rising through the ranks, he has consistently showcased his talent on the global stage, bringing accolades to India.

His recognition with the Khel Ratna serves as a testament to his hard work, discipline, and exceptional skill in the game.

Manu Bhaker’s story also stands as a beacon of resilience and determination. Overcoming initial setbacks and challenges, she has proven her mettle as a shooter of global renown. Her inclusion in the Khel Ratna list is a testament to her outstanding contributions to Indian sports.

Harmanpreet Singh, who has been a pivotal figure in Indian hockey, and Praveen Kumar, a Paralympian of exceptional calibre, further represent the diversity and strength of India’s sporting talent. Their achievements inspire countless young athletes across the nation.

The award ceremony on January 17 will not only celebrate these athletes but also serve as a moment of pride for the entire nation. By recognising their efforts, the government continues to encourage and promote sports as a vital part of India’s growth and identity.

D Gukesh’s recognition, in particular, highlights the rising prominence of chess as a sport in India and sets a benchmark for future aspirants. His journey underscores the value of discipline, focus, and passion, serving as an inspiration for the younger generation.
