Punjab FC cruised to a 3-0 victory against last year’s ISL winners Mumbai City FC during their Durand Cup match in Kolkata on Sunday.
Norwegian striker Mushaga Bakenga led the charge with two goals, while Croatia's Filip Mrzljak added a third in injury time.
With this victory, Punjab FC solidified their position as second in Group C, just behind Kerala Blasters, who have already secured their spot in the next round. Punjab FC's chances of advancing to the quarter-finals remain strong.
The match saw Punjab FC dominate early, putting pressure on Mumbai City's young side and testing their goalkeeper repeatedly. Despite the relentless attack, the first half ended goalless, with Mumbai's defence holding firm.
Punjab FC was awarded a penalty at the start of the second half, but Luka Majcen missed the opportunity by shooting over the bar. Substitute Mushaga Bakenga also missed a close-range chance shortly after.
The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Filip Mrzljak's cross found Bakenga at the far post, who easily headed the ball into the net. Mrzljak then extended the lead in added time, finding the bottom corner of the goal after being set up by Muhammed Suhail.
In the final minute, Bakenga sealed the victory with a successful penalty conversion, capping off a dominant performance by Punjab FC.
