India's dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, recently shared the harrowing details of the life-threatening car crash he survived 13 months ago. The cricketer revealed his genuine fear of leg amputation after the horrific incident that occurred as he was driving from Delhi to Roorkee to meet his family in December 2022.
Pant, a key player in India's cricket squad, had just returned from Bangladesh, where he played a crucial role in India's Test victory in Mirpur. Speaking in the Star Sports series 'Believe: To Death & Back,' documenting his recovery journey, Pant disclosed the terrifying thoughts that crossed his mind during the aftermath of the crash.
"If there was any nerve damage, there was a possibility of amputation. That is when I felt scared," Pant admitted. He humorously noted, "I had taken an SUV, but what I was seeing was a sedan," as he recalled the wreckage of his vehicle.
Recounting the immediate moments post-crash, the 26-year-old shared the excruciating pain he experienced as his right knee had dislocated, turning 180 degrees as he lay face down. Fortunately, two individuals, Rajat Kumar and Nishu Kumar, managed to pull Pant out of his SUV just before it caught fire.
Reflecting on the incident, Pant acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "It was the first time I had such a feeling in life. At the time of the accident, I was aware of the wounds, but I was lucky as it could have been even more serious."
Following initial treatment in Dehradun, Pant was airlifted to Mumbai for specialised care arranged by the BCCI. Surgeries to reconstruct all three ligaments in his right knee were performed, and the cricketer underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Describing the rehabilitation process, Pant admitted, "I am focusing on recovery cut off from the world. It helps me in recovering fast, especially when the injury is so serious. For recovery you have to do the same thing every day. It's boring, it's irritating, it's frustrating, but you have to do it."
The aggressive batter, renowned for his crucial role in India's historic Test series win in Australia, disclosed that the doctor advised him a recovery time of 16 to 18 months. However, Pant, known for his determined attitude, expressed his intention to reduce the recovery period by six months.
Pant also stated that, until he resumes playing cricket, he refrains from making elaborate plans for the future. Rishabh Pant is expected to make a comeback to the field during the upcoming IPL season, representing the Delhi Capitals.
