England defeated India by 4 wickets to level the three-match ODI series on Thursday, courtesy of an unbeaten knock by the experienced Joe Root. Root played an unbeaten 99-run knock to help the hosts chase down a decent 234-run target in 44.1 overs.
With this win, England has not only levelled the series but also set the stage for the thrilling series decider. While Joe Root missed a personal milestone, he, however, did take his team over the line after early setbacks in the run chase.
The right-handed batter faced 133 balls during his stay at the crease in Cardiff and hammered 9 fours.
For India, Gurnoor Brar picked up two wickets, and the other four bowlers accounted for the dismissal of one English batter each. But their effort was not enough to help India win the match and go 2-0 up.
The series decider will be played at Lord's on Sunday, July 19.
After being sent in to bat first, Team India managed to put on just 233 runs in 44 overs. Shreyas Iyer emerged as the top scorer with 66 runs, while Virat Kohli also contributed 65 runs. For England, Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson each bagged 3 wickets. Saqib Mahmood also picked up 2 wickets.
In reply, hosts England comfortably overhauled the target in the 45th over with 4 wickets in hand as Joe Root scored an unbeaten 99 runs and missed his ton by a run.
