The victory parade for India's T20 World Cup-winning cricket team in Mumbai took an unfortunate turn as several fans were injured at Marine Drive on Thursday.
According to Mumbai police, some fans faced breathing difficulties and required urgent medical attention.
Eyewitness Ravi Solanki recounted the chaotic scene, "I was coming from the office and heard that the Indian team would arrive between 5 pm-6 pm, but they were delayed. The crowd kept growing, and the police failed to manage the situation. People began shouting, leading to some falling over each other. It was very unorganised, with no proper crowd control. This happened between 8:15-8:45 pm."
One of the injured, Rishab Mahesh Yadav, described his ordeal, "The crowd was overwhelming. I fell, got choked, and lost consciousness. I was taken to a nearby hospital and received treatment. I feel fine now, but the mismanagement and lack of police alertness were evident."
The parade, led by Rohit Sharma, started from Marine Drive with fans lining the route to celebrate the team's success.
Players lifted the T20 World Cup trophy and acknowledged the support of their fans. Some enthusiastic supporters even climbed trees to catch a glimpse of their cricket heroes.
During the parade, players distributed cricket balls to fans, posed for selfies, and signed autographs. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the lack of crowd control marred the event.
After the parade, the team was felicitated at Wankhede Stadium. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) presented the team with a ₹125 crore cheque as a token of appreciation for their victory.
The entire team stood on stage with BCCI officials, marking the culmination of the day's events.
