The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced that Sharath Kamal, a veteran table tennis player who has won the Commonwealth Games twice and received the Khel Ratna award, will carry India’s flag at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. Ace shuttler PV Sindhu will be the female flag bearer for India during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Shiva Keshavan, a Luger and Winter Olympian, has been chosen as the deputy Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics. Gagan Narang will lead the Indian shooting team in France.
The flag-bearer at the Olympic Games is a symbolic leader who leads the country’s delegation during the Opening Ceremony parade, proudly displaying the country’s flag.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, PT Usha, also confirmed that badminton superstar Sindhu is India's flag-bearer for the Paris Games. “I am also delighted to announce that India's only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, as the female flag-bearer alongside table tennis ace Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony,” she added.
Sharath Kamal will become the 19th flag bearer for India at the Olympics.
The first flag-bearer for India at the Olympics was athlete Purma Banerjee at Antwerp 1920, while in Tokyo 2020, boxing legend Mary Kom and former Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh shared the honour.
It's worth noting that Mary Kom, the bronze medalist at London 2012, who competed in her final Summer Games in Tokyo, will take on the role of Chef de Mission for the Indian contingent heading to Paris.
