Shreyas Iyer is reportedly set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain, with the change expected to be formalised soon, according to multiple reports.

The decision is likely to be taken when selectors meet on Saturday, June 6, to finalise the Indian squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of England and Ireland.

If confirmed, the leadership change would mark a significant shift in India’s T20 setup, just months after Suryakumar Yadav led the side in the T20 World Cup campaign at home.

Reports suggest that Suryakumar may also struggle to retain his place in the T20I squad, with team management reportedly looking at a long-term leadership option ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature, and the subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The 35-year-old endured a mixed run of form in recent months, scoring 242 runs in nine innings during the World Cup at a strike rate of 136.72, followed by a disappointing IPL 2026 season where he managed 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, has been in strong domestic and IPL form and has earned praise for his leadership abilities. He has previously guided franchises including Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals and led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024.

In IPL 2025, Iyer scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, followed by 498 runs in IPL 2026 at a strike rate of 168.81, further strengthening his case as a leadership option.

While he was left out of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup squad due to middle-order competition, reports suggest the reshuffle has now opened the door for his return in a leading role.

There has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the selection committee so far.
