Soorma Hockey Club captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed his happiness after his team began their Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 campaign with two points. The team secured a thrilling shootout victory against Tamil Nadu Dragons on Sunday at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

The match witnessed intense action, with Tamil Nadu Dragons taking the lead in the fourth quarter through Nathan Ephraums’ goal in the 49th minute.

However, Gurjant Singh responded swiftly for Soorma Hockey Club, equalising in the 54th minute and pushing the game to a penalty shootout after the 1-1 draw in regulation time.

In the shootout, Harmanpreet Singh, Victor Wegnez, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Nicolas Keenan displayed composure to convert their chances. Goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch played a pivotal role by making two crucial saves, leading Soorma Hockey Club to a 4-1 victory in the shootout.

Reflecting on the match, Harmanpreet Singh said, “We maintained ball possession for most of the game and played well overall. This was our first match with new players, and we have built good momentum. In the next match, we aim to improve and secure a win. Shootouts are always a 50-50 chance, but we are happy to start the season with two points.”

With this victory, Soorma Hockey Club has climbed to the third position in the points table. Their next challenge will be against UP Rudras on Thursday.

In another clash on the same day, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers defeated Hyderabad Toofans 3-2, earning a full three points.

The Bengal Tigers now lead the HIL standings, followed by Delhi SG Pipers in second place and Soorma Hockey Club in third. Tamil Nadu Dragons and Team Gonasika are currently placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

UP Rudras and Kalinga Lancers are yet to play their opening matches in the tournament, while Hyderabad Toofans remain without any points after their defeat.
