Spain, England all set for EURO 2025 title clash

Defending champions England will be facing Spain in the Euro 2025 final that pits tactical brilliance against sheer resilience, as two footballing powerhouses clash in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday.

A clash of footballing philosophies will define the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final, as Spain’s silky possession-based style meets England’s indomitable fighting spirit in Basel on Sunday.

While Spain arrive with a near-perfect record and a squad brimming with finesse and control, England have powered through adversity, staging dramatic comebacks to defend their crown. Between the two lies a story of contrasting journeys, but a shared hunger for glory.

Spain have trailed for just four minutes in the entire tournament, a testament to their commanding midfield pairing of two-time Ballon d’Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí. “We always have the confidence that in terms of positioning and having possession, we tend to be very precise and it's difficult to take the ball off us,” said Putellas.

England, however, have made a habit of surviving on the brink. They came from behind in both knockout matches, thanks to game-changing appearances off the bench from Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. “I think we've nearly killed her twice this tournament!” joked Ella Toone about coach Sarina Wiegman. “She says we've definitely aged her.”

Spain midfielder Patri Guijarro acknowledged the grit of their opponents: “There's no fragility. And I think that above all, their competitiveness is what has got them this far. But what they're doing is not easy.”

Their recent history reflects a seesaw of power. England knocked Spain out of Euro 2022 with a late comeback and extra-time winner. Spain replied by lifting the World Cup in 2023 with a 1-0 win over England in Sydney. This year, they traded victories again in the UEFA Nations League — Spain winning the latest encounter 2-1.

The final also guarantees a continuation of a tradition: a woman coach lifting the Euro trophy. Either Wiegman, chasing a hat-trick of titles across two nations, or Spain’s Montse Tomé will extend the streak of female coaching champions dating back to 1997.

Wiegman’s credentials are already etched in history. After winning with the Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022, she now eyes a third title. For Tomé, it marks a breakthrough moment, guiding Spain to their maiden final after 13 failed attempts.

The final adds another layer of nostalgia. The only previous Women's Euro final decided by a penalty shootout came 41 years ago, when Sweden edged England in Luton. Ironically, England's shootout victory against Sweden in this year’s quarter-finals helped them return to the title clash. Spain, meanwhile, have yet to win a shootout in Euro history, having lost to Austria in 2017.

Spain enter Sunday’s fixture with 13 wins from their last 14 matches, while England carry the steel of a side that refuses to surrender. From contrasting paths, they now converge at the summit — a final promising beauty, brawn and a potential modern classic.
