Iga Swiatek Receives Extra Security After Harassment at Miami Open.

Iga Swiatek was given additional security protection at the Miami Open after being verbally harassed during a practice session. The incident involved a man who had previously sent her troubling messages on social media.

Swiatek's team released a statement condemning the behavior, stating that while constructive criticism is acceptable, threats and disturbances during training are unacceptable.

They promptly reported the matter to the tournament organizers and the WTA, both of which responded swiftly by increasing security measures.

The WTA emphasized that player safety remains a top priority and assured that strict security protocols are in place for all events. While details of these measures are not disclosed, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for players.

The Miami Open also addressed the situation, stating that they take security seriously and continuously assess threats to respond appropriately.

Swiatek, the five-time Grand Slam champion, did not attribute the security concerns to her quarterfinal loss to Alexandra Eala, saying it did not disrupt her preparation.

The incident comes shortly after a similar situation involving Emma Raducanu at the Dubai Championships, where a stalker was removed from her match and later detained by police. In 2022, Raducanu had also been granted a restraining order against an obsessive fan.

With growing concerns over player safety, the WTA and tournament organizers continue to reinforce security protocols to protect athletes from harassment and threats.
