A six-day international kayaking tournament will be held on the fast-flowing Tawangchu river in Arunachal Pradesh from February 10 to 15, organisers said on Monday.

The second edition of the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship (TTIKC) will take place at Lungla in Tawang district, near India’s border with China, according to a release issued by the organisers.

The championship is being organised with the support of the Arunachal Pradesh government and in association with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association, Arunachal Kayaking and Canoeing Association, and the Arunachal Olympic Association.

Tawangchu, the main river of Tawang district, holds strategic significance as the region lies above 10,000 feet and close to the Line of Actual Control with China. Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,129-km-long frontier with the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The river system is fed by two major tributaries from Tibet, Tsona Chu and Nyamjang Chu, along with several mountain streams that converge within Tawang district. The river flows west into Bhutan, enters Assam as the Manas, and later merges with the Brahmaputra.

Apart from its strategic importance, Tawang is known for its natural beauty and spiritual heritage. The birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, the town is also home to one of Asia’s oldest monasteries, founded in 1680.

The six-day championship will feature ceremonial prayers marking the opening of the festival, followed by race briefings, practice runs, and competitive events including downriver sprint races and kayak slalom contests.

The entire Tawang district forms part of the Tawangchu river basin, making it a natural venue for white-water kayaking and adventure sports, organisers said.
