Tim Southee equals Gayle's record in farewell Test match.

New Zealand veteran Tim Southee made headlines on Saturday by equalling West Indies legend Chris Gayle’s record of sixes in Test cricket. Southee’s achievement places him in joint fourth spot on the all-time list with 98 sixes.

This milestone came during his farewell Test match against England at Seddon Park, marking a significant moment in his illustrious career.

Southee, playing his 107th and final Test, showcased his trademark aggressive batting style in a quick-fire knock of 23 runs off just 10 deliveries. His innings featured three sixes and one boundary, helping New Zealand post 315 for nine at stumps on Day 1 of the third and final Test against England.

The record for the most sixes in Test cricket is held by England captain Ben Stokes, who has smashed 133 sixes in 110 matches. Stokes is followed by former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum with 107 sixes in 101 Tests and Australian great Adam Gilchrist, who sits in third place with 100 sixes in 96 matches.

Southee’s achievement came at a crucial moment for New Zealand. After a strong opening partnership between Tom Latham and Young, which set the foundation at 142 for two, the Kiwis faltered mid-innings, slipping to 231 for seven.

However, an unbeaten 50 from Mitchell Santner steadied the innings, with support from William O’Rourke at the other end.

Southee’s remarkable ability to clear the boundary has been a key aspect of his Test career. His aggressive intent with the bat has complemented his prowess as a leading bowler for New Zealand.

Now, as he bids farewell to the longest format, Southee is just two sixes away from becoming the fourth player in Test history to reach the 100-sixes milestone, a feat only achieved by Stokes, McCullum, and Gilchrist so far.

The 36-year-old’s career has been a cornerstone of New Zealand cricket. Known for his consistency with the ball and his ability to contribute valuable runs lower down the order, Southee has been a vital player for the Black Caps.

This final Test not only marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket but also adds another chapter to Southee’s legacy.
