The prestigious Tour de France will return to Britain in 2027, with the Grand Départ commencing from Edinburgh, Scotland, marking its first visit to the United Kingdom since 2014, organisers announced on Wednesday.
The 2027 edition will be the 28th time that the Tour de France has commenced outside France. The last time Britain played host to the start of cycling’s premier race was in Yorkshire in 2014, following an earlier Grand Départ in London in 2007.
The women’s edition of the Tour, the Tour de France Femmes, will also stage parts of its race in Britain for the first time.
However, its starting location is yet to be determined. Unlike the men’s race, the women’s event will take place on different dates.
While the full route details remain undisclosed, organisers confirmed that the men’s Tour will traverse sections of England and Wales after setting off from Edinburgh.
Recalling the remarkable reception in Yorkshire a decade ago, Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, expressed optimism about the upcoming event.

"The Tour de France and the UK share a rich history, and I am delighted to bring the Grand Départ to the country in 2027," Prudhomme stated. "Britain has always welcomed the Tour with enthusiasm and pride, and this collaboration across England, Scotland, and Wales promises to make the event even more special."
Britain boasts a proud legacy in the Tour de France, with three British riders securing overall victories.
Sir Bradley Wiggins became the first British winner in 2012, followed by four-time champion Chris Froome and 2018 winner Geraint Thomas.
The Grand Départ has increasingly found new international locations in recent years.
The 2023 edition commenced in Bilbao, Spain, while Florence, Italy, hosted the opening stages in 2024. The 2026 race is set to begin in Barcelona, Spain, whereas this year’s Tour will start from Lille, France.
For the Tour de France Femmes, the 2027 event will be only the second occasion when the race commences outside France, following its 2024 Grand Départ in the Netherlands.
