Australian opener Travis Head and his wife Jessica have been subjected to severe online hate and abuse following his heated verbal exchange with Indian star Virat Kohli during an IPL match.
The two players clashed on the field during the Sunrisers Hyderabad versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru match on Friday. The confrontation continued even during the customary post-match handshake.
Head was involved in a fiery argument with Kohli after the latter was dismissed for 15, as RCB slumped to a 55-run defeat against SRH. Following the incident, Head and his wife Jessica faced a barrage of online abuse, with Kohli fans flooding their Instagram comment sections with hateful remarks.
Jessica later spoke to a local newspaper, revealing that her friends and family had also received hateful private messages. “I woke up to my socials blasting… we are fine but they are attacking my friends and family,” she said. “Passion will always be part of sport, but so is remembering there are real people and families behind the game. Hopefully this encourages more kindness and support for one another.”
Jessica said this was not an isolated incident, recalling the wave of hate and abuse she and her family faced after Head’s match-winning performance that helped Australia win the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad.
