Two former Indian cricket champions, Kirti Azad and Yusuf Pathan, secured victories in the Lok Sabha Elections from West Bengal, representing the All India Trinamool Congress.
Pathan triumphed in Baharampur constituency, defeating Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury by 85,022 votes, while Azad won Bardhaman-Durgapur by defeating BJP's Dilip Ghosh with a margin of 1,37,981 votes.
Both Pathan and Azad, renowned cricketers, emerged victorious in their political debut under the TMC banner.
Pathan, a member of India's T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007 and the ICC Cricket World Cup-winning squad in 2011, secured a significant win against Chowdhury, a six-time MP.
Azad, a key player in India's 1983 World Cup victory, returns to Parliament after a previous defeat in the 2019 polls.
He began his political journey with BJP, served as an MLA, and won the Lok Sabha seat from Darbhanga in 2014.
After parting ways with the BJP, Azad joined the Congress and contested unsuccessfully from Dhanbad in 2019.
In 2019, another cricketing legend, Gautam Gambhir, secured a seat in East Delhi but was not fielded this time after resigning from the BJP earlier.
