Inderjit Singh (IS) Bindra, the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and a veteran cricket administrator, passed away on Sunday, January 25, at his residence in New Delhi at the age of 84. He remained as BCCI president from 1993 to 1996. He passed away around 6:30 PM on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after his condition deteriorated following lunch.
Bindra, a titan in Indian cricket administration, has had over four decade long association with cricket administration since 1975. He was associated with commercial cricket and served as the President of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) from 1978 to 2014, nearly three decades. Pertinently, the "Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium" Mohali is named after him, in recognition of his contribution to promotion of cricket.
He was instrumental in bringing the World Cup to the Indian subcontinent in 1987 and 1996, and played a major role in opening up the Indian cricket television market, significantly increasing the financial power of the board. This stellar role in staging world cup in 1987 enabling opening up of the Indian cricket television market won him applaud all over. It is primarily by dint of his relentless efforts India’s stature in the world of cricket improved significantly, also because of strengthening of financial position.
Bindra rose to the role of Special Secretary to the then President of India Giyani Zail Singh in the decade of 1980’s. Bindra also worked as the principal advisor of International Cricket Council when Sharad Pawar was its President.Bindra also faced rough times, especially when he supported another cricket man Lalit Modi during the phase of match fixing crisis. He was widely criticized for this, also for endorsing the role of the then CEO of South Africa cricket.
He was also an advisor in the formation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and later rose to grab the role as principal advisor of International Cricket Council .The veteran crciekt administrator retired from active role in 2014, after nearly 34 years of his association with the sport.
