On a balmy Bengaluru evening, under the floodlit skies of M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Virat Kohli scripted yet another chapter in his glittering IPL saga. The crowd, clad in red and chanting his name, erupted as he pierced the gap through cover — a familiar sight over the years, yet historic this time.
That boundary made him the first player in Indian Premier League history to reach a staggering 1,000 boundaries, a milestone befitting the man who has become synonymous with the tournament itself.
The milestone came during RCB’s clash against Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Kohli’s remarkable tally — spanning all 18 IPL seasons — includes 721 fours and 279 sixes, underscoring his consistency and dominance in the format.
The 35-year-old tops the list for the most number of fours in IPL history and stands third in the sixes category, trailing only Chris Gayle (357) and Rohit Sharma (282).
Kohli, who has amassed 186 runs in the ongoing IPL season, is now on the brink of another record — with 99 half-centuries in T20 cricket, he is poised to become only the second batter to score 100 fifties, behind Australian opener David Warner.
However, despite the personal milestone, the match against Delhi Capitals proved disappointing for Kohli and RCB. Batting first, the home side made a strong start but managed to post a modest total of 163 in 20 overs.
Kohli contributed 22 runs, which included two sixes and a four, but the innings lacked acceleration in the middle and death overs. In response, KL Rahul’s unbeaten 93 guided Delhi Capitals to a convincing victory, chasing down the target in 17.5 overs.
With the defeat, RCB remained third on the IPL points table, having secured three wins in five matches. They are set to face Rajasthan Royals in their next outing on Sunday.
