Virat Kohli has suffered a rare distal semimembranosus tendon tear during the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad, ruling him out of the upcoming ODI series.
According to reports, Kohli sustained the injury while batting in the final, where he remained unbeaten on 75. Medical scans confirmed a distal semimembranosus tendon tear, a rare form of hamstring injury affecting the tendon near the back of the knee.
A distal semimembranosus tendon tear refers to a rupture of one of the hamstring muscles at its attachment point to the inner upper tibia. The semimembranosus muscle plays a key role in bending the knee and extending the hip.
Medical experts note that this type of injury is uncommon because hamstring tears usually occur higher up in the muscle or tendon junction during explosive movements such as sprinting. The tendon at the knee is typically thick, strongly anchored and less prone to rupture, making such cases rare.

A BCCI source informed Kohli has been ruled out of the ODI series following the injury. “He is out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury. He got injured during the final. Scans have revealed a distal semimembranosus tendon tear,” the source said.
According to reports, Kohli is expected to be out for around two weeks. He is likely to miss the first two matches against Afghanistan on June 13 in Dharamsala and June 17 in Lucknow. While he may be available for the third match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly reluctant to rush his return.
The IPL final in Ahmedabad saw Kohli continue his strong form, but the injury concern has now overshadowed his performance as medical staff monitor his recovery.
