Norway’s dominance in the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics continued as competition entered its penultimate day on Saturday. The country maintains an almost unassailable lead with 17 gold medals, with its total tally reaching 37, after clinching three more out of the ten medals up for grabs on Friday.
It has held the number one spot throughout the past 15 days. The other powerhouse, the United States, has edged past the hosts, Italy, since Friday, with some blistering performances on snow and ice in Cortina and Milano.
The United States now holds second spot with 10 gold, 12 silver, and 7 bronze for a total of 29, while the host nation, Italy, sits third with 9 gold, 5 silver, and 13 bronze (27 total).
Day 15 of the competition featured intense action in biathlon, freestyle skiing, speed skating, and more.
Norway's Johannes Dale-Skjevdal had earlier clinched a key gold in the men's 15km mass start biathlon on Friday, contributing to their 17th gold – a new single-Games Winter Olympics record.
The US continued to impress in freestyle disciplines, with Alex Ferreira securing gold in the men's halfpipe on the previous day, completing a personal medal set after previous silvers and bronzes.
Germany's Daniela Maier upgraded her earlier bronze to gold in women's ski cross after a reallocation, while China's Wang Xindi delivered a stunning performance to take the men's aerials gold.
With 102 out of 116 events completed, the final day on Sunday is all set to witness some of the best performances from finalists in ice hockey.
Norway, on the other hand, looks all set to top the table for a third consecutive Winter Games.
The United States and Italy remain locked in a tight battle for second, boosted by strong showings in team events and home-crowd momentum.
