India’s impressive campaign at the World Squash Junior Team Championships came to an end in the semifinals as the men’s team suffered a 0-2 defeat against the United States, forcing them to settle for the bronze medal in the prestigious international event.
Entering the tournament as the fifth-seeded team, India produced several commendable performances on its way to the last four, demonstrating resilience, skill, and determination against some of the world’s strongest junior squash nations. However, the team found the American side too strong in the semifinal encounter, with the USA securing victories in the opening two matches to book its place in the final.
The result came just a day after India’s women’s team also faced disappointment against the United States. The Indian women were knocked out in the quarterfinals by the same opponents, making it a difficult finish to the tournament for the country despite several encouraging individual displays.
One of the standout matches in the men’s semifinal featured India’s promising youngster Gurveer Singh, who fought valiantly against his American opponent in a closely contested five-game battle. Gurveer made a confident start by claiming the opening game 11-7, displaying aggressive shot-making and excellent court coverage to put his opponent under pressure.
However, the American player gradually found his rhythm and responded strongly in the second game, edging it 11-9 to level the match. The momentum shifted further in the third game as Gurveer struggled to maintain consistency, allowing his opponent to take it 11-6 and move ahead.
Refusing to surrender, Gurveer bounced back in the fourth game with a spirited performance. He regained control of the rallies and forced the contest into a decisive fifth game by winning 11-7. With the match finely balanced, expectations were high for a dramatic finish.
In the deciding game, however, the American player proved more composed under pressure. Capitalizing on a series of unforced errors and maintaining a high level of consistency, he raced to an 11-3 victory to seal the match. Gurveer’s determined effort earned praise despite the defeat, as he displayed fighting spirit throughout the contest.

The second singles match also went in favour of the United States, giving them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three semifinal tie. As a result, the third match was no longer required, confirming India’s exit from the competition and ensuring the team would finish with the bronze medal.
Although the semifinal defeat was disappointing, India’s overall performance at the World Squash Junior Team Championships reflected the growing strength of the country’s junior squash programme. Reaching the semifinals against a highly competitive international field highlighted the potential of the young Indian players and provided valuable experience at the highest level of junior competition.
The bronze-medal finish is expected to boost the confidence of the Indian squad as they continue their development and prepare for future international events. With talented players like Gurveer Singh gaining exposure against world-class opponents, Indian squash remains optimistic about producing future champions capable of competing successfully on the global stage.
Despite missing out on a place in the final, India can take pride in another podium finish at the World Squash Junior Team Championships, underlining the steady progress being made by the nation's emerging squash talent.
