Yashasvi Jaiswal fiery fifty carries India to 138/2 at tea

India's Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrates his fifty during the fourth day of the 2nd Test cricket match between India and Bangladesh, at Green Park, Kanpur, Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.

Indian batters went on a rampage to better their own record of fastest team hundred in men's Test cricket while resetting the record of quickest fifty on the fourth day of the rain-affected second match against Bangladesh in Kanpur on Monday.

A blistering fifty by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (72 off 51 balls) took India to 138 for two at tea in their first innings on the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh, in Kanpur on Monday.

Jaiswal hammered 10 fours and a six to make the fourth fastest fifty for any Indian batter after Rohit Sharma's early fireworks (23 off 11 balls, 3x6s, 1x4s), as the 50-run mark was breached in a mere three overs at the Green Park on Monday.

India now trail the visitors by 95 runs.

Shubman Gill (37) and Rishabh Pant (4) were at crease when the tea was taken.

Earlier, Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 in their first innings. Mominul Haq led their batting with an unbeaten hundred.

India thus broke England's record of scoring the fastest team fifty in 4.2 overs which they had registered against the West Indies at Trent Bridge in July this year.

While Jaiswal continued with his aggressive approach, No 3 Shubman Gill also joined in to punish the Bangladesh bowlers as India crossed the triple-figure mark in 11.overs, improving their own record.

India had recorded the fastest century for any team in terms of overs faced when they went past the 100-run mark against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 2023.

Brief scores: India: 138/2 in 16 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 72) vs Bangladesh: 233 all out in 74.2 overs (Mominul Haque 107 not out; Jasprit Bumrah 3/50, Akash Deep 2/43, Ravichandran Ashwin 2/45, Mohammed Siraj 2/57).
