Rishabh Pant made history in the IPL Auction, becoming the most expensive player ever when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured him with a record-breaking Rs 27 crore bid.
This shattered Shreyas Iyer’s previous record, set just minutes earlier when he was picked by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore.
The massive bid went viral on social media, with IPL fans celebrating the moment. Zomato, known for jumping in on viral trends, joined the fun with a cheeky tweet.
"Lucknow, if you have 27 cr in your pants, thoda humpe bhi kharcho yaar #IPLAuction," joked Zomato, making a pun on Pant’s last name.
Fans and Zomato users responded with equally funny comments. One joked, "Unfortunately, you deliver ‘food,’ not ‘six’." Another teased, "Today, Lucknowi Biryani will be the most ordered dish." A third even challenged Zomato, "If you deliver in the stadium, then only."
The playful comments didn’t stop there, as some users poked fun at Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal. This came after a controversial job listing for a Chief of Staff position, which required no salary for a year and a Rs 20 lakh donation from the selected candidate—a condition that received heavy backlash.
"Just hire 135 Chiefs of Staff, and you’ll have your Rs 27 crore," joked one user, while another quipped, "No way we’re paying for the Chief of Staff role."
In response to the criticism, Goyal clarified that the unusual job requirements were a filtering strategy to identify the best candidates for the role. He explained, "This wasn't just a regular job post.
The ‘Rs 20 lakh payment’ was simply a filter to find people who value the opportunity of a fast-track career without being constrained by traditional limits."
He also added that any candidate who mentioned having the money or being willing to pay would be automatically disqualified.
