Known for his dancing skills and comic roles, veteran Hindi film actor Govinda has joined the Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena and is likely to contest the North-West Mumbai Lok Sabha seat.
Govinda’s meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister early on Thursday in Mumbai fuelled speculation over his political plans, which were confirmed after he was welcomed into the party by senior party leaders at Balasaheb Bhawan.
This is a comeback for Govinda, who has delivered hit films like Aankhen, Hero Number One and Coolie. He had earlier been a Lok Sabha MP and won the Mumbai North seat in the 2004 Lok Sabha election as a Congress member by defeating BJP leader Ram Naik.
His absence from the Lok Sabha during parliamentary sessions came in for criticism and in 2009 he decided not to contest after resigning from the Congress.
This time round he’s likely to be fielded from North-West Mumbai seat against Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Amol Kirtikar, who was also in the news after visits from Enforcement Directorate officials soon after his nomination was announced.
