Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a two-day visit to HQ Northern Command of the Army and forward areas in Jammu and Kashmir, reviewed the preparedness of armed forces. He was briefed by the top military leadership on the prevailing security scenario in the region with renewed focus on border areas, counter-insurgency operations and the forthcoming Amarnath Yatra, which will commence on July 3.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Upendra Dwivedi, Northern Command General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lt Gen Pratik Sharma and other senior officers, including commanding officers of all units, were present at the meeting in the Udhampur-based headquarters.
Rajnath, who had arrived in Udhampur on Friday, led the International Yoga Day celebrations of the armed forces on Saturday morning, performing a range of ‘asanas’ and breathing exercises along with about 2,500 soldiers. After the yoga session, the top army leadership briefed Rajnath on the prevailing security issues and challenges faced in border areas.
The briefing aimed to reflect on the operations undertaken by the armed forces in the hinterland, especially counter-insurgency operations in dense forest areas of Jammu division, where militancy has witnessed a surge in recent years. The review meeting also discussed the security arrangements in place for the Amarnath Yatra. The Army is putting multi-domain security arrangements in place for the safe and smooth conduct of the yatra, along with other security agencies.
