Six months after winning a ₹1-crore lottery, 26-year-old Kartik Bauri was found dead in a pool of blood near the home of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader in Asansol’s Kulti area. Police have arrested two persons, including former TMC borough chairman Baby Bauri, after Kartik family alleged that he was murdered.
According to police sources, the incident took place late on Tuesday night in the Barakar Lakhiyabad area under Kulti police station. Kartik, who had been building a new home with his lottery winnings, was found grievously injured near Baby’s residence after locals heard shouts of “thief, thief.” He was rushed to a private hospital in Kulti, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Kartik’s mother recounted, “He had dinner around 11 pm and said he was going to visit the neighboring area. When he didn’t return, we heard commotion outside. Later we found Kartik lying in a bloody state near Baby’s house.”
Family members of the deceased have directly accused Baby and his family of murder, alleging foul play linked to Kartik’s recent lottery win. “Why would someone who won ₹1 crore go out to steal?” relatives questioned, rejecting claims that Kartik had broken into the TMC house.
Following the complaint lodged by Kartik’s family, Kulti Police arrested Baby and another person. Both were produced before the Asansol court on Wednesday.
However, Baby has denied all allegations, asserting that the young man entered his house late at night as a burglar. “Someone came into the house with his face covered by a towel. When he stepped on the feet of the children sleeping upstairs, they screamed. We woke up and shouted ‘thief, thief.’ The person jumped from the roof in fear. I could not recognise him,” Baby said before being produced in the court.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Asansol-Durgapur Commissionerate) Javed Hossain stated, “The body of a person, identified as Kartik Bauri, has been recovered. Based on the family’s complaint, two people have been arrested. The investigation is underway.”
