One person was killed after a tourist bus carrying 49 passengers veered off the road at Kuryanad in Kuravilangad here on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Sandhya, a native of Iritty in Kannur. Although 18 people were injured in the accident, none of them is in a critical condition. It has been reported that all passengers on the bus were from Kannur.
The coach, which was travelling to Kannur from Thiruvananthapuram, crashed on the MC Road near Cheenkallel bridge around 1:30 am. It is suspected that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The bus reportedly lost control, overturned, and crashed into a tree while attempting to negotiate a curve on the MC Road stretch near Cheenkallel Church. A crane was later used to remove the bus and clear the traffic disruption.
The injured have been admitted to a private hospital in Monippally and the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam. Kuravilangad Police and Fire and Rescue personnel from Kaduthuruthi jointly carried out the rescue operations.
According to the police, all passengers were from Iritty and were returning home after visiting Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. Kuravilangad police have registered a case against the driver, Vinod, for negligent driving and causing death by accident.
The body of the deceased will be handed over to relatives following a post-mortem examination.
