A man was killed while three Jammu and Kashmir police's Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel were injured during a weapon-snatching bid in Doda late on Thursday night, officials said on Friday. A religious preacher has been detained in connection with the incident. The identity of the detained man was not made clear since police were investigating the matter.
An SOG team had laid an ambush on Thursday along Jaie-Gandoh Road, about 35 km from Bhaderwah town, following reports of suspicious movement in the high-altitude area, a senior officer said. At around 11.30 pm, the team intercepted a youth who allegedly tried to assault and snatch a service rifle, the officer claimed.
"During the ensuing fight between the forces' personnel and the youth, an SOG jawan opened fire, during which the youth suffered bullet injuries, while three police personnel were also injured in the incident," the officer further said.
All four injured personnel were then taken to the Sub-District Hospital, Bhaderwah, and later referred to the Government Medical College, Doda, for specialised treatment.
The youth, a 30-year-old, was identified as Aarif Hussain (30), a resident of Cheeka village, who succumbed to his injuries, the officials said.
Police have deployed additional security personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force and the police to Bhaderwah town. Meanwhile, taking note of the incident, the army has launched a search operation in the nearby Jaie area, they said.
