Ten Bangladeshi nationals were detained from Guwahati’s Paltan Bazar area late on Tuesday night and are set to be pushed back after verification confirmed their nationality, police said.
The individuals were initially picked up by personnel of Paltan Bazar Police Station during a routine verification drive. During questioning, they allegedly failed to produce valid identity and travel documents, prompting authorities to detain them for further scrutiny.
A police official said the group was subsequently handed over to the Border Police for verification and legal procedures.
“Verification of the individuals has been completed. They have admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals. They will now be pushed back,” the official said.
Authorities have also launched an inquiry into the lodge where the group had reportedly been staying. The lodge owner, identified as Hridoy Deka, is under scrutiny for allegedly allowing the individuals to stay without collecting and verifying mandatory identity documents.

The latest detention comes less than a week after a similar operation in the city. On 19 June, police apprehended 13 Bangladeshi nationals from the Arya Nagar area of Guwahati. Like the latest group, they were unable to produce valid identity and travel documents and were subsequently pushed back after verification by the authorities.
Police said intensified verification drives are being conducted across the city as part of efforts to identify illegal entrants and ensure compliance with immigration regulations.
The operations form part of a broader crackdown on undocumented foreign nationals in Assam, particularly in urban centres and transit hubs. Officials said surveillance and document verification exercises would continue in sensitive locations, including hotels, lodges and rented accommodations.
Authorities have urged hotel and lodge operators to strictly follow identity verification norms and maintain proper records of guests to avoid legal action.
Further investigations are under way to determine how the detained individuals entered the country and whether any local facilitators were involved in providing accommodation or logistical support.
