In a significant breakthrough for security forces, 10 members of the newly-formed militant outfit Dimasa Halan Dui United (DHDU) surrendered before Assam Police on Saturday, marking a decisive step toward curbing renewed insurgent activity in the region.
The surrender, which took place at Dhansiri in Karbi Anglong district, was the result of a sustained intelligence-based operation and outreach initiative by the district police. The militants laid down a cache of arms and ammunition, including one AK rifle, three pistols, one SB gun, one grenade and assorted ammunition, before Superintendent of Police Sanjib Kumar Saikia.
The Assam Police confirmed that the success resulted from proactive intelligence gathering, which began in April after inputs suggested the DHDU had begun mobilising efforts to revive separatist militancy in the hill districts. The group, primarily composed of youths from the Dimasa tribal community, had allegedly started recruiting members and amassing weapons with the intent of establishing an underground armed presence.
SP Saikia said, “This surrender is a testament to our commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Karbi Anglong. Through meticulous intelligence coordination and constant surveillance, we were able to prevent the resurgence of a dangerous militant outfit.”
The Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, lauded the police team's efforts, posting on social media: “Ensuring the peace is our motto!”

Echoing this sentiment, Assam Police posted on X: “In consonance with CM @himantabiswa sir’s vision for peace & progress, @karbianglongpol launched a series of intel-based operations coupled with simultaneous outreach. It resulted in 10 misguided youth, attempting to form a new extremist group, surrendering with arms.”
Authorities have described the event as a preemptive strike against a potential rise in armed insurgency, crediting early intelligence for averting what could have escalated into a wider security threat. Investigations are ongoing to uncover any remaining networks or sympathizers linked to the DHDU.
The Assam Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law, order and development in the region, emphasising that peace remains their foremost priority.
