Alien Sherin Abraham, declared brain dead after a road accident, saved five children through organ donation as authorities coordinated a Green Channel transfer across Kerala for transplantation.

In an act of extraordinary courage amid unimaginable grief, the parents of a 10-month-old infant declared brain dead following a road accident have donated her organs, giving a new lease of life to five other children in Kerala.

Alien Sherin Abraham, daughter of Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John of Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, was critically injured in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam Borma Kavala junction on the MC Road while the family was travelling from Kottayam to Thiruvalla. The infant lost consciousness immediately after the accident.

She was first taken to the General Hospital in Changanassery and later shifted to St Thomas Hospital in Chethipuzha before being referred to Believers Church Medical College Hospital. As her condition showed no improvement, she was moved to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on the night of February 6. Despite sustained efforts by a specialist medical team for nearly a week, doctors declared her brain dead.

In the face of devastating loss, the grieving parents consented to donate their daughter’s vital organs, turning personal tragedy into a life-saving mission. The complex transplantation process was coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO).

State Health Minister Veena George lauded the family’s decision, calling it a powerful message of humanity. She said that while the loss was unbearable for the parents, the child’s name would remain etched in Kerala’s history for saving multiple lives.

A high-priority logistical operation was set in motion to transport the harvested organs swiftly. A dedicated ambulance, escorted by police through a specially arranged “Green Channel”, departed from Amrita Hospital for Thiruvananthapuram. Authorities coordinated traffic control measures across districts
to ensure uninterrupted passage.

Alien’s liver has been allocated to a six-month-old infant at KIMS Hospital, making the recipient among the youngest to receive a liver from a deceased donor under such circumstances. Her kidneys will benefit a child undergoing treatment in the paediatric nephrology ward at SAT Hospital. Her heart valve has been designated for a young patient at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), while her corneas have been donated to patients at Amrita Hospital.

Through her parents’ selfless decision, little Alien’s life has become a beacon of hope, offering five children a renewed chance at survival and underscoring the profound impact of organ donation.
