A devastating cloudburst in the Harsil area of Uttarkashi district has triggered flash floods, resulting in the reported disappearance of approximately 10 Army personnel from a camp in the lower Harsil region. The cloudburst took place around 1:40 pm on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction in Dharali village, which is a key stopover for pilgrims on the route to Gangotri.
Despite the fact that some of its own personnel are missing, the army is actively involved in rescue efforts, demonstrating its commitment to assisting citizens during natural disasters.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with teams from the army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed at the site. Three ITBP teams have already reached the location to assist.
The flash floods have destroyed several homes, hotels, and shops, and many more have been damaged. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to save people who are trapped in the affected areas. According to the Army's Surya Command, a massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area on Tuesday afternoon, causing a sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement.
The army stated that "troops of the Ibex brigade were immediately mobilised to undertake rescue operations."
