A tragic incident has shaken the Patrasayar area of Bankura district, where the body of a 10-year-old girl was found under suspicious circumstances late Tuesday evening, near a freshly dug pit— believed to have been an attempt to conceal the body. Police suspect the child was sexually assaulted and strangled by the accused before the attempted cover-up.
According to local sources, a young man from the same neighbourhood was seen walking with the child earlier in the day. When the girl did not return home, her family and villagers began a search, which led to the disturbing discovery.
The family was alerted by locals who had last seen the girl with the youth. When confronted, the man allegedly gave inconsistent statements. Based on his responses, villagers suspected foul play and accompanied him to a location he reportedly identified. There, they found a freshly dug pit, a spade and the girl’s body nearby.

Outraged by the discovery, the villagers allegedly assaulted the youth before police from Patrasayar station arrived and took him, in a critically injured state, to Bishnupur Super Speciality Hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The girl's father said, "My daughter had been missing since 3 pm. We heard from people in the village that she was seen with a local youth. When the villagers brought him in, he admitted to something that led us to the place.”
In light of the incident, police presence was increased in the village due to rising tensions. An official complaint was filed by the girl’s mother and a case has been registered under relevant legal sections pertaining to the unnatural death of a minor.
Bishnupur Sub-divisional Police Officer Suprakash Das said, “We were informed on Tuesday evening that a minor girl had gone missing. Later, her body was recovered and an individual was found injured at the location. He was taken to hospital, where he passed away on Wednesday morning. An investigation is underway and the autopsy reports will help clarify the details.”
Both bodies have been sent to Bishnupur District Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police continue their probe into the matter to ascertain the full sequence of events.
