The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has imposed a substantial fine on Kannada film actress Ranya Rao in a gold smuggling case, according to DRI sources on Tuesday.
The actress has been hit with a penalty of ₹102 crore. The DRI also fined hotelier Tarun Kondaraju ₹63 crore, while jewellers Sahil Sakaria Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain were each ordered to pay ₹56 crore.
DRI officials went to Bengaluru Central Jail on Tuesday to serve each of the accused a comprehensive notice, which included a 250-page document and a further 2,500 pages of annexures. A source within the DRI told the the media that it was an "herculean exercise" to compile the detailed notice and supporting evidence. "Today we served 11,000 pages of documents to the accused," the source said.
The DRI sources informed that the actress was arrested on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, from where she was returning from Dubai with 14.8 kg of gold.
The actress was earlier sentenced to one year in jail in July under the tough Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) in relation to the case.
The COFEPOSA case was presented to the High Court on Tuesday and has been set for hearing on September 11.
