A land dispute that lasted for more than three decades in Bihar's East Champaran district came to an end on Wednesday, as a 103-year-old woman finally regained possession of her property following a court order.
The district administration formally handed over more than one kattha of land in Mangalapur village, under Kalyanpur block, to Habiban Khatoon. The process was carried out under tight security and in accordance with legal procedures.
According to officials, the dispute began in 1994 when ownership of the land became contested between Khatoon and other parties. After a legal battle spanning 32 years, the court ruled in her favour and directed the administration to implement its order.
Acting on the court's directive, a joint team of Revenue Department officials, members of the local administration, and police personnel reached the village to oversee the handover.
As part of the traditional announcement of the decision, drums were beaten across the village while possession of the land was handed over.
To maintain law and order, around 300 police personnel were deployed at the site. A magistrate, Revenue Department officials, and personnel from the Kalyanpur police station remained present throughout the operation, which concluded without any untoward incident.
Expressing relief, Khatoon's family thanked the judiciary and the administration, saying the outcome had strengthened their faith in the legal system and reinforced the importance of patience.
"It was the administration's responsibility to implement the court's order. Possession of the land was handed over after completing all legal formalities. The entire operation was carried out peacefully, and no untoward incident was reported," said Vineet Kumar, in-charge of Kalyanpur police station.
