Eleven out of 14 migrant workers from Jharkhand who were stranded in Dubai returned safely to India on Wednesday, bringing relief to their families back home.
The workers arrived at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. They were later sent by bus to Howrah railway station to continue their journey to their respective hometowns.
The workers said if adequate employment opportunities were available in the country, they would not have felt compelled to seek jobs abroad. According to them, the lack of sufficient opportunities for skilled labour forces many to migrate overseas in search of livelihood.
The workers had travelled to Dubai in October 2025 to work on transmission line projects under EMC Company. They alleged that the company failed to pay their wages and made them work beyond stipulated hours.
They also faced difficulties related to accommodation and food. Distressed by the situation, the workers had sent a video message describing their plight and appealed to the government for assistance.

After the matter came to light, both the Jharkhand government and the Central government intervened. Following coordinated efforts, arrangements were made to ensure the workers’ safe return.
Social worker Sikandar Ali, who has been actively working for the welfare of migrant labourers, said that while people travel abroad in search of livelihood, many face exploitation and harsh conditions.
Those who returned include Rajesh Mahto from Giridih district, Ajay Kumar and Daleshwar Mahto of Bokaro district, Jageshwar Mahto, Baijnath Mahto, Dilip Mahto, Gangadhar Mahto and Triloki Mahto, Deepak Kumar, Rohit Mahto and Sewa Mahto from Hazaribagh district.
The process for the return of the remaining three workers is currently underway.
