A spokesperson stated that in Assam's renowned Kaziranga National Park, a total of 129 wild animals have perished due to the severe flood as of Sunday.

By Saturday, the devastating flood, which has affected the entire Northeastern state, had claimed the lives of 114 animals.

Among the deceased creatures are six rhinoceroses, 100 hog deer, two sambar, and an otter. Drowning was cited as the primary cause of death, while two animals perished in collisions with vehicles while migrating to higher ground, according to the spokesperson.

The animals use a section of the NH-715 to traverse the hills of Karbi Anglong.

The spokesperson reported that twenty of these animals passed away during treatment.

To date, 96 animals have been rescued, including 84 hog deer, two each of rhino, sambar, and scops owl, as well as one each of swamp deer, hare, rhesus macaque, otter, elephant, and jungle cat.

The official said that 26 animals are currently under medical care, while 50 others have been released after treatment.

The park is experiencing the worst inundation in recent years. The last such devastation happened in 2017, when 350 animals died.

The official said that of the 233 camps in the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 68 were inundated by Friday evening.

The camps inside the national park are where forest personnel reside for patrolling and other related tasks in order to safeguard the plants and animals.

At the same time, restrictions on vehicular movement along NH-715 have been enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), with vehicles limited to speeds of 20-40 km per hour.
