Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday the apprehension of 14 Bangladeshi nationals for illegally entering the state, with nine of them reportedly holding Aadhaar cards.
In a post on X, Sarma revealed that the foreigners were caught in the South Salmara-Mankachar and Karimganj districts on Tuesday.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as Md. Ariful Islam, Md. Monir Hussain, Mofazal Hussain, Md. Mizanur Rahman, Abyadullah Hassan, Ashraful Islam, Manik Miah, Nobi Hussain, Waliul Ullah, Hazarat Ali, Sofikul Islam, Illand Furkan Ali, Mominul Haque, and Md. Anwar Hussain, all residents of Bangladesh.
“Based on intel input, 14 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended by @assampolice yesterday in South Salmara and Karimganj. 9 of them were found carrying Indian Aadhaar cards,” he stated.
The CM praised the vigilance of the state police, noting that since unrest began in Bangladesh, a total of 108 illegal infiltrators have been apprehended.
Assam shares a 267.5 km border with Bangladesh across districts including Karimganj, Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar.
The state has an Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Karimganj, which is one of three ICPs in the Northeast, alongside Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura.
Assam DGP G P Singh assured that the police and BSF will take all necessary measures to prevent illegal entry, while allowing Indian passport holders to return from Bangladesh during the ongoing crisis.
