The Union government has sanctioned the construction of 15,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Rural) for surrendered Naxalites and families impacted by Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced on Friday.
The initiative, part of the state’s rehabilitation strategy, aims to reintegrate former extremists and provide a sense of security to victims of Left Wing Extremism (LWE). “The initiative is a big step towards bringing them into the mainstream.
These are not just houses but a symbol of respect and security for such families. Our government will implement this scheme with complete transparency and promptness,” Sai stated in an official communiqué.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the lives of those affected by Maoist violence, highlighting the scheme’s role in promoting social cohesion and regional development.
Under the programme, the superintendent of police will compile a list of surrendered Naxalites and violence-affected families, which will then be sent to the zila panchayat's chief executive officer (CEO) for verification, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma explained.
“After verification, land will be allocated to beneficiaries by the collector. On this basis, the process of constructing houses will commence in accordance with PMAY guidelines,” Sharma stated.
The Union government’s approval follows Deputy Chief Minister Sharma’s recent discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.
The scheme will prioritise families excluded from the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 and Awas Plus 2018.
The Centre has permitted the state to upload the beneficiaries’ details to the Awas Plus portal by 6 December, ensuring their inclusion in the scheme.
Chief Minister Sai emphasised the symbolic significance of the housing project, noting that it represents a transformative step towards social harmony and a secure future for these families.
