A 16-day mass drug administration (MDA) drive aimed at eradicating filaria will be launched in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, on Monday, according to an official statement. The drive will be implemented in two blocks: Ormanjhi and Tamar.

The initiative will begin on Monday, with drugs being distributed at 326 designated booths or camps set up in these blocks. These booths will be located at Anganwadi centers, schools, colleges, and community buildings. From February 11 to 25, a door-to-door campaign will be carried out, where health workers will visit every household to administer the drugs.

The population targeted for the administration of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazole consists of 2,45,828 individuals, excluding pregnant women, children under two years of age, and those who are seriously ill.

Ranchi’s Civil Surgeon, Dr. Prabhat Kumar, emphasised that the 16-day drive is crucial in the fight against filaria. On the first day, the drugs will be given at the established booths. Health workers will then go door-to-door from February 11 to 25 to ensure widespread coverage.

The drive is focused on these two blocks due to the findings of a recent transmission assessment survey, which indicated that filaria cases have been identified in the area. This mass drug administration effort is part of a larger initiative to prevent and eliminate filaria in the region.
