A double-decker sleeper bus collided with a milk tanker on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, resulting in the deaths of eighteen individuals and injuries to 19 others, as per officials.
The incident occurred at approximately 5 am near Jojikot village in the Behta Mujhawar police station area.
Gaurang Rathi, the District Magistrate, stated that initial investigations suggested the bus, en route from Motihari in Bihar to Delhi, was travelling at high speed and struck the milk tanker from behind.
The accident resulted in eighteen fatalities and 19 injuries. An inquiry has been initiated, as per Rathi.
S B Shiradkar, the Additional Director General of Police in Lucknow, informed PTI that among those killed were 14 men, three women, and a child.
Arvind Kumar, the Circle Officer (CO) of Bangarmau, mentioned that both the bus and the milk tanker overturned due to the collision's impact. The drivers of both vehicles were among the deceased.
He added that the injured individuals were promptly taken to a hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable.
Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims, as stated by the police.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said officials have been instructed to ensure the best treatment for the injured.
"The loss of lives in a road accident in Unnao district is extremely sad and heartbreaking. My condolences are with the bereaved families," he said in a post on X.
"District administration officials have been instructed to reach the spot and expedite the relief work. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant a place to the departed souls at his feet and for the speedy recovery of the injured," the chief minister said.
