Valuable idols and ritual items were stolen from a Vishnu temple located within the Amma Maharaj Chhatri complex of the Scindia royal family in Gwalior, triggering concern among residents and authorities. The temple is located near the Scindia Palace and the historic Jai Vilas Palace in the Katore Tal area, which houses memorials of members of the erstwhile Scindia royal family.
The theft came to light on Sunday morning when the temple priest opened the shrine and discovered that several items were missing. According to initial reports, 18 idols made of silver, brass, and copper were stolen, along with ritual materials and utensils used for offerings (bhog).
The watchman stationed at the Chhatri complex promptly informed the Jhansi Road Police Station after being alerted by the priest. Superintendent of Police Manish Yadav said that Amar Singh Parihar, a security guard residing near Amma Maharaj’s Chhatri, filed an FIR at the police station.
According to police officials, two guards are deployed at the complex every night—one stationed at the main gate and another assigned to patrol the premises. However, neither guard reported noticing any suspicious activity during their duty on Saturday night. The theft was only discovered the following morning when the priest raised the alarm.
“Police have launched a search operation and formed dedicated teams to examine CCTV footage and collect technical evidence from the site,” said Yadav.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to trace the accused and recover the stolen items from the prominent religious and royal site.
