A fire broke out in a government hospital in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday, prompting the rescue of approximately 190 patients, officials confirmed.
No casualties were reported in the incident. The blaze originated around 1 am in an air-conditioner inside the ICU of the gynaecology department at Kamla Raja Hospital, which operates under Gajra Raja Medical College, according to Collector Ruchika Chouhan.
Hospital security personnel acted swiftly, evacuating 13 patients from the ICU by breaking windows and moving them to a super-specialty hospital. The remaining patients from other wards were also relocated to ensure their safety.
Authorities confirmed that all patients from the ICU and other hospital wards were unharmed.
A preliminary investigation suggested that a short circuit was the likely cause of the fire. According to a release from the state Public Relations Department, hospital guards and ward staff promptly shifted the patients to safety before firefighters from the Gwalior Municipal Corporation arrived and brought the blaze under control.
An attendant of a patient described the chaotic scene, stating that thick smoke quickly filled the hospital premises, severely limiting visibility. Despite the confusion, the staff immediately began transferring patients to a safer location.
The attendant confirmed that their patient was unharmed and had been relocated to another ward. Authorities have announced a probe into the incident to determine the exact cause and prevent future occurrences.
