Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced today that he will recommend the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state to the Central government.

This move follows a recent resolution passed by the state assembly urging the Centre to implement the NRC.

"The state lacks the authority to implement the NRC independently," stated Singh at a program held on the sidelines of another event.

"Therefore, we have forwarded a formal recommendation to the Central government, urging them to undertake the necessary steps for implementing the NRC in Manipur."

The Chief Minister further clarified that the base year for the NRC would be 1961, aligning it with the base year established for identifying illegal immigration in the context of the state's Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.

The ILP system, implemented in December 2019, regulates the entry and stay of non-residents in Manipur.

This development comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the NRC, particularly following its implementation in Assam.
