The State Investigation Agency (SIA) Kashmir conducted searches at nine locations across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday in connection with the 1990 double murder of a Kashmiri Pandit and his son.
The case was initially registered at Police Station Dooru in Anantnag. It has now been taken up for investigation by the SIA.
The case concerns the abduction and killing of Kashmiri Pandit writer and social worker Sarwanand Koul Premi and his son, Virender Koul. The two were residents of Soaf Shali in Kokernag, Anantnag, when the incident took place in 1990.
Premi, a Kashmiri Pandit poet, and his 27-year-old son were abducted from their home by armed militants on the night of April 29, 1990. Their bodies were found hanging from a tree two days later, on May 1.
The latest searches are seen as an important step in the long-pending case. The SIA is trying to establish the circumstances of the killings and take the investigation forward. More information about the locations searched and the findings of Wednesday’s operations is awaited.
Earlier, on August 8, Counter-Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) carried out searches at several locations in Anantnag, Shopian and Baramulla districts.
During one of the operations at a house in the Hiller Shahabad area of Anantnag, a CIK team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmad seized two digital devices.
Officials said the seizure was linked to FIR No. 03/2023 registered at Police Station CIK Kashmir. The case was registered under Sections 153A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Sections 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
